Purchasing cell phones in Korea

International students can buy cell phones after they receive alien registration card which will take approximately one month after application. Major telecommunications companies in Korea are SK Telecom, KTF, and LG Telecom. There could be little difference among these companies with the quality of phone calls, but you can enjoy discounts if you choose the same company as that used by people you speak frequently with. Newer models are considerably expensive. However, costs for equipment or start-up fees can potentially be waived or discounted extensively depending on the call plans and contract period you choose. The more expensive the calling plan is and the longer the contract period is, the cheaper the phone would get. Another way to save money on equipment is to buy previous season's cell phone models or purchase used phones. For students staying in Korea for only a semester study, buying a used phone (approximately 50,000 won) would be the cheapest option. Or simply bring prepaid phone card from your country or buy it at designated local sellers in Korea. Airlines and airports often carry international phone cards.

Calling plans for smart phones

Plans range from approximately 35,000 won to 65,000 or higher. Expensive plans tend to offer more free calling minutes, free text messaging numbers, and internet data access. Please review each option carefully and choose the plan that fits your lifestyle. Be a smart buyer so that you wouldn't get stuck with expensive mobile contract and unwanted options. If you don't talk a lot on the phone, a prepaid mobile phone can also be a good option. These phones have a set amount of minutes per month, and when you run out of minutes, you can purchase more.

How to use cell phones

Between the cell phone users, just press cell phone number. When you call a landline phone with your cell phone, make sure to press the area code first. In case you want to call a landline number (821-0000) in Daejeon (area code 042), you need to press 042 first and local phone number. When making an international phone call either with your cell phone or with a landline phone, press international call carrier number such as "001", "'00365" or "00700" first, then the country & area codes and local phone number.
